Costco, originally, was only catering to small business retailers for their wholesale pricing. But the company realized the potential of selling more for selected non business members. They started the exclusively "for members only" policy for retail. At present, Costco now has more than 430 outlets all over the US and in Mexico, Canada, UK, South Korea and Japan. Costco also showcases computers, electronics, flowers, jewelry, books, CDs and DVDs, pharmacy , hardware, furniture, automotive products and even gasoline for cars - CBD
Costco is a familiar brand for most retail companies in the Philippines. Its business model and concept has been copied by popular supermarkets and department stores like Makro, Uniwide Sales, Shoppwise, SM and the almost identical, S&R Price Smart. Costco opened its first branch in 1976 under the name Price Club and in a converted airplane hangar in San Diego California. This started the warehouse type store design which retails all kinds of products from food to rtw, appliances and others, under one roof.

The most popular shopping destination in San Bruno is the Shops At Tanforan. From the list of previous blogs on malls reviewed so far, this is the only mall that houses movie theaters, owned and operated by Century Theatres. In total, they have 20 screens, including XD digital and 3D theaters , inside this mall. The Shops At Tanforan also offers the best in shopping with anchors like Sears, JC Penney, Barnes & Noble, PETCO and Target. Other popular stores inside are Old Navy, G By Guess, Hollister, Nine West, Victoria's Secret and Forever 21. When it comes to dining, they have BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse and Hooters. Further, this is only mall that has a bi-level food court featuring fastfood favorites like Panda Express, Starbucks, Andersen Bakery, Burger King, Coldstone Creamery, Great Steak and Potato, Mai Thai, Italia Express and for the pinoys, Jollibee Fastfood. For the Christmas season, just like other malls and department stores, they feature Santa Claus at the main atrium for kids who would like to tell Santa their christmas wishes and shoppers who would want to take pictures with him - CBD Johnny Rockets is an international restaurant chain which began operations in the mid 80's on Melrose Ave. in Los Angeles. It is now located all over U.S., Canada, Mexico, Germany, several Midle East countries and just recently, in the Philippines. They began their operations in Manila last year and has two oulets (Eastwood Mall Libis and newly opened Tomas Morato Q.C.) The design and concept of this fastfood outlet is reminiscent of a 50's or 60's diner in the U.S. It has an all American look and feel, with old memorabilias of the past and table top jukeboxes playing old favorites. They serve hamburgers, sandwiches and in my opinion, the best milkshakes and malts. An added feature is an impromptu dance number from the crew every now and then. There used to be a similar concept there in Quezon City in the 90's, called Sam's Diner. Best Buy is a multinational company and the biggest retailer of technology and entertainment products in the US. It also operates in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Canada, China and recently United Kingdom. This is where most people purchase their tv's (LCD, LED, HD. Internet TV, 3D TV, Plasma), computers, printers and laptops, video and digital camers, cellphones and accesories, video game consoles, cds, dvds and blu-ray discs, home appliances and more. This retail giant which operates in warehouse type outlets is the US version of Abenson and SM Appliances. Moreover, they also offer deliveries, installations, repairs and other services to their customers. These photos were taken on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, and traditionally the start of the Christmas shopping season here. On this day, same with other retailers, Best Buy opened at 4am and offered huge discounts and promotional sales to all customers. Some even camped out in front of their stores 2 days before Black Friday to take advantage of the featured deals. This particular branch located at San Bruno was so full it took at least 2 to 3 hours to reach the cashier counters. It was announced that their huge sale will extend until Cyber Monday, the marketing term for the Monday immediately after Black Friday, which is fast becoming to be the biggest online shopping day in the US - CBD Stonestown Galleria is located in San Francisco along 20th Ave. and near the San Francisco State University. Its a fairly sized mall, similar with SM Sta, Mesa and has Nordstrom, Macys, Trader Joe's and Borders Books as anchors. The interior design of the mall reminds me so much of Glorrieta. Its like a mini Glorietta with its small center court, dramatic skylines, the white columns, clean hallways, an elegant foodcourt and an upscale clientele. Their other high end tenants are Apple, See's Candies, Bath and Body Works, The Body Shop, Godiva Chocolatier and Coach. In addition are classy restaurants like Boudin Bakery and Cafe, Chevy's Fresh Mex, Nordstrom Cafe, Olive Garden and Starbucks. For the shopaholics, besides Macys and Nordstrom, you can shop at Nine West, Victoria's Secret, Gap, Eddie Bauer, J. Crew, Ameican Eagle, Lucky Brand Jeans, Banana Republic, Forever 21, GUESS, Footlocker and H&M. An added feature of this mall is their Stonetown Farmer's Market, held every Sunday, showcasing local merchants and certified farmers with a wide variety of quality produce and other specialties - CBD Westlake Shopping Center is the next best shopping destination in Daly City. Anhored by TJ Maxx, Home Depot, Ross Dress for Less, Trader Joe's, Safeway, Walgreens, Burlington Coat Factory and DSW Shoes. The design of the center is comaprabale to that of Greenhills Promenade, Eastwood City and Metrowalk where shoppers are provided with wide, tree-lined promenade and convenient walkways to access the stand alone establishments. Being situated in Daly City and just like Serramonte Center, this mall is popular amongst kababayans. There used to be a Gerry's Grill here but recently closed. I heard Pinoys found it a little expensive compared to their competitors and nearby food outlets. Other popular outlets located here are Starbucks, Jamba Juice, Chipotle Mexican Grille, Subway and newly opened Wingstop. We will review all these retail and restaurant outlets as we go along in the next blogs - CBD Located at the Farmers Market along Alemany Boulevard, San Francisco, this weekend bargain is like a big garage sale where you can purchase a wide variety of second hand and used items. The great assortment of the displayed items range from furnitures, clothes, toys, arts and crafts, jewelries, collectibles and antiques collected from all over the world to locally made products. Its like being in an epsiode of "Clean House" where you can see customers and sellers haggling for prices and making deals. Its not exactly for everybody but for those who seek a true bargain and an avid collector may find something worth their while. This flea market is open very Sundays from 7 AM to 3 PM. Great Mall is the biggest indoor shopping center that i have visited, so far, within the Bay area. Its concept leans more on an outlet or clearance type of mall with minimal design in building aesthetics and style. Its strength and best features are the branded establishments and retail stores located inside. Famous names like Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Coach, Abercombie and Fitch, Calvin Klein, Kenneth Cole, Oakley Vault, DKNY and 200 and more department stores, shops and restaurants. Yes, there is a Jollibee and a Red Ribbon outlet in one of the main entrances and seem to attract a lot of clients and not just our fellow kababayans. Their food court tenants (e.g. Subway, Little Tokyo, Cajun and Grille, Inay Filipino Kitchen etc...) and restaurants (e.g. Outback Steakhouse, Chipotle Mexican Grille, Arbys etc...) offers a wide variety of specialties which discerning customers will find acceptable to their taste. Snack counters (e.g. Starbucks, Mrs. Fields Cookies, Wetzels Pretzels, Cold Stone Creamery, Dreyers Ice Cream etc...) are also available for between meals for merienda - CBD Panda Express is the U.S. version of Chowking here with over 1302 branches all over the US and Puerto Rico. They offer traditional Chinese favorites (like Mandarin chicken, Kung Pao chicken, Sweet n Sour pork and chicken, Broccoli Beef, Egg Rolls, Chow Mien, Eggplant Tofu and my favorite Panda Express Orange Chicken and Fried Rice) to new creations like Honey Walnut Shrimp and Kobari Beef. I have yet to see a branch that does not have long queue of customers waiting, from their downtown San Francisco branch to their mall food court outlets all over the bay area. At present, Panda Express is the recognized leader in its niche and the fastest growing Asian chain here - CBD Serramonte Center Mall is the premiere shopping destination in Daly Ciy California. The mall is average in size (like Robinson Pioneer perhaps), one level, with big hallways and a good balance of natural lighting. Its anchor tenants are Target and Macys Dept Store. The food court appears to be newly renovated with nice seats and tables. It has a zen like koi pond and several lounges of elegant seatings for customers and shoppers to relax on. I would call it a Pinoy Mall bacause most of the shoppers, to the cashiers and sales reps of most stores and restaurants are kababayans. Even some of the establishmants are very familiar with pinoys there in Manila, like Bench, Auntie Annes, Cinnabon, Sbarro,Taco Bell, McDonalds, Dairy Queen/Orange Julius, Manila Bay Cuisine (foodcourt tenant) and Bath and Body Works - CBD |
